Margaret Mitchell's Scarlett Rhett

The novel is, I mean, Margaret Mitchell was a journalist, so she knew how to write. One of its aesthetic virtues that almost nobody ever talks about is that it's funny. She has a very modern, acidic sense of humor. And Rhett is funny and witty. So there are many things to enjoy about the novel, despite its very obvious drawbacks. But I don't think it's a great work of art now. I do think it's an unbelievably successful piece of propaganda.
