The Iowa Writers Workshop, Sophie Says, Go to Hell.
In 1966, he co-founded the American Writers Against the Vietnam War. In 1968, he made a public promise to refuse to pay taxes until the end of the war. The next year he published an influential essay in which he attacked mainstream American poetry as impersonal and lacking in soul. His criticism of American society expanded after that.
