The Ascetic Root of Gnosticism
In ancient Gnosticism, the thing that was fundamental about reality was the non physical. Since the body is irrelevant to the soul, it doesn't matter what I do with my body. Christianity rejected both of these in a very real way. It rejected the liberty andism, certainly because it called for strict morality but it did not go to the extreme of asceticism.
