Harbour Bosch - The Germans in the First World War
Harbour Bosch was the mastermind behind much of the German's chemical warfare. He helped to develop things like the deadly heavier than air chlorine gas, and he personally oversaw its deployment in places like Eep in Belgium where it killed over 67,000 people. Harba continued to work on weaponized gases after the First World War until the rise of the Nazis made him rethink his firm allegiance to Germany. For one thing, as a proud German nationalist, he was once quoted as saying, during peacetime, a scientist belongs to the world, but during wartime, he belongs to his country. In doing and saying these things, Harba very significantly tarnished his reputation.
