France's ability to project military and cultural power well beyond its borders made a very important member of nato. But paris soon began to resent us leadership of the alliance. Tensions racted up over few years, and in 19 66, de gal withdrew from nato's integrated military command structure. It wasn't until two thousand and nine, that's more than forty years later, that president sacosi announced that france would rejoin nato's command structure.
