Professor pinker's new book is called probability and randomness. In it he argues that formal logic can be useful for day to day reasoning. He says the habit of formal reconstruction even if carried out partway can expose fallacious inferences or unstated premises which would otherwise lie hidden in any argument. But this doesn't mean you should spend hours devoted to figuring out how to understand formal logic better, writes Professor Pinker.
