Tolkien and Christopher Wiseman's War on the Western Front
Tolkien and his friend Christopher Wiseman were at Oxford when war broke out. They both decided to join up, but Tolkien stuck around for the duration of the conflict. In those first few months he wrote a poem about Air Endle, the star Mariner in Middle-Earth. He was always quite maverick following his own path, says author David Walliams.
