The US Empire learned its lesson by just not drafting people and just forcing people to serve through the overt propaganda. The silver medal in terms of American long running blood soaked Imperial istic aggressive wars. I doubt very much how conscious this process is at most levels. It wants you to come away with a certain ideological impression about those very things, those very real world things. That's the blunt end of what is really quite a sophisticated ideological weapon that is being used to very carefully manage people's understanding of these things.
