El Niño: Little Boy, Big Trouble

The Morning Brief

00:00

The El Nino Ocean Oscillation

In the 1600s a group of Peruvian fishermen suddenly observed that the sea waters were turning too warm for fish to come onto their nets. This strange thing happened in late December and so they named it El Nino de Navidad or the Newborn Christ. In normal conditions trade winds push the warm surface of the ocean from South America towards Asia. Then cold water rises from the depths of the sea to replace the warm water that has been pushed forward. All this and much more in today's episode. It's Tuesday the 25th of April. I'm Anir Banjadri, your favourite audio deep dive of morning brief.
