The Pressure to Baptize for the Dead
Baptizing for the dead, if you don't believe in resurrection, is completely stupid. Paul often quotes from things they've said that he disagrees with, and then responds to them. So I'm inclined to think that Paul is citing something that he doesn't agree with, but just citing it helps him to advance his argument in this chapter. It seems like people would be drawn to do something like that on behalf of those who never hear the gospel.
