If we're split within ourselves, i we're actually far from our true selves. One of my favourite sayings comes from a story in the desert fathers about a fourth century monk named john the short. A jealous fellow monk once approached john as he was teaching at the front of a church. Andand this fellow monk said to him, john, your cup is full of poison. And john answered, yes, but you said that when you could only see the outside. I wonder what you would say if you saw the inside. Now, john the short was not defensive in his response. He courageously admits, ah, it's far worse than you think. You have no idea.
