The Importance of Connections to Chinese Scientists

The scientists in this chapter are well connected and very crucially also well respected by their colleagues, right. They had a direct relationship with someone on our colleagues or friends or they knew someone who knew someone - some of these predated 1949. And I think it's because, you know, to, I guess I'm a child of the internationalization generation in terms of China's scholarship. It was really keen not to lose the individuals because for those who were making these journeys in either direction, it was the individuals and those relationships that really mattered. But one example is where she kind of proves the exception in her insistence in not wanting to portray herself as a China expert, which is very rare
