Rishi Sunak said we are in a period of high inflation. 10%. This is not a time to be cutting taxes. We have to get an inflation under control first and make sure the economy is solid before you start talking about cutting taxes. The argument was we can't be irresponsible by dropping taxes. If you immediately drop taxes, unless money coming in to the government, they've got less money to spend on things. You finish up with the government shelling out, paying out lots of interest payments instead of being able to invest in public services. Not that it's that important, but it is important,. but it shouldn't be important at all.
My dad returns to talk more about UK politics, this time describing the disastrous economic policy of Liz Truss and her Chancellor (finance minister) Kwasi Kwarteng. Advanced level English listening practice - this is complicated stuff, but keep listening to develop your English skills and learn about what's going on in UK politics and current affairs.
