Eleanor's Sudden Change in Status Reflects That
After the Young King dies, his father is forced to rethink the whole structure of his empire. He's not only lost his eldest son, but his co-king and heir. What he comes up with is this: Richard should step up to be his new heir. That means moving into line to inherit England, Normandy and Anjou. Jeffrey can stay in Brittany. Which leaves John? Henry has a real soft spot for John, the baby of the family. And during his education, he's shown a weirdly intense appetite for the really nerdy bits of government. They both understand that boring lawmaking and tax collecting is the real route to power.
