Departmental ditties and other verses
Book • 1897
Departmental Ditties and Other Verses is Rudyard Kipling's first published book, initially appearing in June 1886 as a collection of poems printed on the Civil and Military Gazette Press in Lahore.
It was reprinted later that year in Calcutta by Thacker, Spink & Co., with multiple further editions.
The collection includes poems reflecting Kipling's experiences in British India, and with each new edition, Kipling added more poems.
The first American edition appeared in 1890, combining Departmental Ditties with Barrack-Room Ballads and Other Verses.
The original 1886 versions of the poems differ slightly from later editions, such as the 1888 third edition versions commonly found in digital archives.
