Operation Dark Heart

Operation Dark Heart tells the story of Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer's five months in Afghanistan in 2003 as a civilian Defense Intelligence Agency officer.

The book describes his leadership of a black-ops team, their successes and failures, and the bureaucratic obstacles that hindered their efforts.

Shaffer also discusses his involvement in the aborted intelligence operation Able Danger, which identified future 9/11 terrorists but failed to pursue them.

The book made headlines due to the Department of Defense's attempts to censor it, purchasing and destroying the entire first printing and redacting subsequent editions.
