What You Have Heard Is True

In 1977, Carolyn Forché, a young poet teaching in California, is visited by Leonel Gómez Vides from El Salvador, who invites her to see the truth of his country on the brink of civil war.

She travels there, meeting military officers, impoverished farmers, clergy, and victims of death squads, including horrifying prison conditions and massacres.

Through these experiences, Forché evolves from an unfocused writer into a committed poet of witness, blending art and activism to document atrocities and urge awareness.
