Sounder

Book • 1969
Published in 1969, Sounder tells the story of a poor African-American sharecropping family living in the Deep South during the difficult years of the nineteenth century.

The family, including the father, mother, and their eldest son, struggle to find enough food, relying on their dog Sounder, a mix of bulldog and redbone coonhound, for hunting.

When the father is arrested for stealing a ham to feed his family, the boy must grow up quickly and find strength in the love and loyalty of Sounder.

The novel won the John Newbery Medal and the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1970 and was adapted into a major motion picture in 1972.
