The Catbird Seat
Book • 1982
“The Catbird Seat” tells the story of Mr. Erwin Martin, a meticulous and routine-oriented head of the filing department at Frings and Marsh, a company disrupted by the arrival of the efficiency expert Mrs. Ulgine Barrows.
Ulgine is an obnoxious, noisy woman who plans to shake up the established order.
Martin, a creature of habit and order, finds her presence unbearable and decides he must "rub out" Mrs. Barrows.
However, instead of committing murder, he cleverly manipulates her into discrediting herself to the company's owner, Mr. Marsh, by pretending to be drunk and confessing to plans she made that are ridiculous.
Mrs. Barrows is fired, and Martin returns to his quiet, undisturbed routine.
