Sistine Madonna

A Painting by Raphael
Book • 1512
The Sistine Madonna is one of Raphael's final Madonnas and a masterpiece of the Italian High Renaissance.

Commissioned by Pope Julius II for the monastery church of San Sisto in Piacenza, the painting features the Virgin Mary holding the Christ child, accompanied by St. Sixtus and St. Barbara.

The composition includes two cherubs at the bottom, which have become iconic in art history.

The painting is celebrated for its use of Renaissance techniques, including three-point perspective and bright tonal colors, and has a rich interpretative history.

It was later acquired by Augustus III of Saxony and is now displayed in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden.
