Wojtek The Bear Polish War Hero

Book • 2010
This book tells the inspiring true story of Wojtek, a brown bear adopted by the Polish Army in Iran during World War II. Wojtek soon took on a more practical role, carrying heavy mortar rounds for the troops and becoming a fully enlisted 'soldier' with his own rank and number during the Italian campaign.

After the war, Wojtek moved to Berwickshire and later to Edinburgh Zoo, where he remained a symbol of freedom and solidarity for Poles around the world.

The book includes an extended introduction by Neal Ascherson reflecting on the Polish experience in the Second World War and its aftermath.
