Het meisje met de zwavelstokjes

On a bitterly cold New Year's Eve, a poor little match girl wanders the streets barefoot and without a coat, trying to sell her matchsticks.

Fearing her angry father if she returns home without selling them, she lights the matches one by one, seeing visions of warmth, a roasted goose, and a beautiful Christmas tree.

Eventually, she sees her deceased grandmother, who takes her to the heavens, ending her suffering and finding her peace.
