Death in the barren ground

This book is based on the diary kept by Edgar Christian during his ill-fated trapping expedition in the Canadian Arctic.

The diary, along with letters to his parents, was published by George Whalley in 1980.

It recounts the journey of Christian, his cousin John Hornby, and friend Harold Adlard as they attempted to survive the harsh winter in the Thelon River barren lands.

The book provides a poignant and detailed account of their struggles, isolation, and the ultimate tragedy that befell them.
