The Roads Must Roll

Set in the near future, 'The Roads Must Roll' envisions a society where massive parallel conveyor belts running at varying speeds (up to 100 mph) have replaced traditional highways and automobiles.

The story follows Chief Engineer Gaines as he confronts a rebellion led by his deputy Van Kleeck, whose followers embrace a radical social theory called 'Functionalism'—the belief that transport technicians, being essential to society's infrastructure, should hold political power.

Through psychological manipulation and strategic action, Gaines works to suppress the uprising and restore order to the critical transportation system.
