Dragonriders of Pern

The series, initiated by Anne McCaffrey in 1967, follows the inhabitants of Pern, a planet colonized by humans who have lost much of their advanced technology.

The Pernese society is pre-industrial, with a feudal-like structure, and relies on dragonriders and their telepathic dragons to defend against Thread, a mycorrhizoid spore that periodically falls from the Red Star.

The series spans over two and a half millennia and includes multiple sub-series and standalone books within the Pern universe.
