Panchatantra

The Five Books
Book • 2014
The Panchatantra is a seminal work of Indian literature, composed around 300 CE, which consists of five books of animal fables.

The stories, attributed to the legendary author Vishnu Sharma, were created to educate three dull-witted princes in the principles of kingship, diplomacy, and wise governance.

The tales are framed as a series of discourses and use animal characters to convey moral lessons on various aspects of life, including friendship, politics, and the consequences of one's actions.

The work has been widely translated and has influenced literature globally, known in Europe as 'The Fables of Bidpai' and in Arabic as 'Kalīlah wa Dimnah'.
