Sitting Bull's War presents the story of America's greatest Indian war through the eyes of the Lakotas and Northern Cheyennes as they fought to retain their traditional lives on the buffalo prairie during the 1870s.
Drawing on extensive Lakota and Cheyenne accounts, pictographic renderings, and original interviews, the narrative chronicles their encounters with white invaders—railroaders, surveyors, prospectors, and the United States Army—including their victories at the Rosebud and Little Big Horn, as well as the subsequent clashes that ultimately led to starvation, submission, and displacement.
The book offers a welcome addition to American Indian wars history by centering Indigenous voices and perspectives often left out of traditional narratives.
