Eneide
Book • 2013
The Aeneid is a Latin epic poem written by Virgil in the 1st century BC. It tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who fled Troy after the Trojan War and eventually settled in Italy, where his descendants founded Rome.
The poem is composed of nearly 10,000 lines in dactylic hexameter and is divided into twelve books.
The first six books narrate Aeneas's journey from Troy to Italy, and the poem's second half tells of the Trojans' ultimately victorious war upon the Latins, under whose name Aeneas and his Trojan followers are destined to be assimilated.
The Aeneid was written to provide a foundation myth for Rome, glorify Roman values, and legitimize the Roman Empire.
