The Unfettered Mind

Book • 1968
The Unfettered Mind: Writings from a Zen Master to a Master Swordsman is a collection of succinct essays by the Zen monk Takuan Soho (1573–1645) to the famed swordsman Yagyu Munenori (1571–1646).

It elucidates the central tenets of Zen Buddhism, and by extension, the martial arts.

The teachings emphasize freedom from mental fixations and cultivating a mind that is flexible, adaptable, and open to new experiences.

Takuan challenges the reader to embrace spontaneity, to act without hesitation, and to overcome the illusions that cloud clear thinking.

He invites the reader to cultivate a state of unfettered awareness, in which intuition becomes a guide and action becomes effortless.

This way of life is intended to enhance not only one's martial skills but also one's spiritual growth.
